Important Notes for those Retrofitting with 'Smart' Controllers and MSMT Nozzles

Please read the following carefully:

If you are seeking a rebate for a WaterSense® labeled weather-based ('smart') irrigation controller, or more than 10 MSMT nozzles, approval is required (not applicable for "new construction").

This may be accomplished in three ways:

  • Having City staff complete a sprinkler system assessment

The DIY check-up form must be submitted to the Water Conservation Division for approval before beginning a project (and applying for a rebate).

Interested in a free sprinkler system assessment?

Call us at 406-582-2280 to schedule an assessment and receive a customized watering schedule!  We can also help you with the approval process for a rebate on a 'smart' controller and/or more than 10 MSMT nozzles.

PLEASE NOTE - For Sprinkler System Product Rebate Applicants:

Approval through a sprinkler system check-up is required for a rebate on a weather-based ('smart') controller and/or more than 10 MSMT nozzles.  The application will NOT be processed without this step being completed.  Approval can come from a City of Bozeman Approved Provider, a DIY Sprinkler System Check-Up form, or a free sprinkler system assessment.

- If an Approved Provider assessed and retrofitted your sprinkler system, simply upload the invoice from the Approved Provider to serve as proof of service and rebate eligibility.

- If you completed a DIY Sprinkler System Check-Up, you must submit the form to the Water Conservation Division for review.  This must be done prior to applying for a rebate.  Water Conservation Division staff may verify the information during a site inspection, and staff must approve the submitted form before a project begins.  For proof of purchase and installation, you must upload both a receipt and a photo of the installed products.

- If city staff assessed your sprinkler system, you may proceed, and you must upload both a receipt and a photo of the installed products.

Sprinkler System Eligibility:

1. The system to be retrofitted (or which has just been installed) must be in good working order - free from leaks and malfunctions.  Once the rebated retrofits to a sprinkler system are installed, the system must not create run-off, overspray or misting.
2. The sprinkler system must have a properly installed and functioning backflow prevention device in order to qualify for rebates.

Sprinkler Product Eligibility:
1. All sprinkler system products must be purchased new in order to qualify for a rebate (this can be done online, at a retailer, or through a landscaping contractor).
2. Weather-based ('smart') controllers must be WaterSense® labeled; click here to search for certified products.
3. If applying for a MSMT nozzle rebate, all nozzles for each proposed zone must be MSMT nozzles - with matched precipitation rates (inches per hour).

Project Details - PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY (Retrofit and New Construction rebate amounts are different):

For a weather-based ('smart') controller, MSMT nozzles, and/or a rain sensor,

"New Construction" is being defined as a new irrigation system being installed (i.e. a project for a house that does not have an irrigation system yet).

"Retrofit" is being defined as an existing irrigation system (with a controller and sprinklers) that will be upgraded with qualifying products.  An existing (developed) property with an old irrigation system, to be completely removed and replaced with an entirely new system, would qualify as a Retrofit.

For drip equipment and/or drought tolerant plants,

"New Construction" is being defined as a new home with no existing landscaping/turf.

"Retrofit" is being defined as any area of high-water-use vegetation (turf/shrubs/flowering plants) that will be replaced with drought tolerant plants and drip equipment.  Areas that were designed to have turf - but were kept bare soil - do NOT apply.  The rebate for drip equipment and drought tolerant plants is applicable ONLY to "Retrofit" projects - to encourage replacing high-water-use plants for low-water-use plants.
