The Bozeman City Commission has created two Residential Parking Permit Districts to reduce parking congestion around Bozeman High School and Montana State University. Within the Residential Parking Permit Districts (RPPD), a permit is required for weekday on-street parking (8 am - 5 pm); excluding legal holidays.  A map of the RPPD can be found by visiting the Parking Documents and Maps page.

Any person who lives within the RPPD is eligible to purchase RPPD permits. Each residence is also allowed to purchase two (2) Visitor permits. Any person employed within the RPPD is eligible to purchase an Employee Parking Permit. Permits are valid from September 1 to August 31.  The cost of an RPPD permit is $25, and they are obtained from the City of Bozeman, Finance Department, 121 N. Rouse Avenue, Bozeman, MT, 59715. 406-582-2337.

Registration is not complete or valid until the decal is permanently mounted on the left rear bumper of the vehicle so it is plainly visible from the rear. Visitor and Employee permits must be hung from the rear view mirror with the printed side facing the windshield. Visitor parking permits shall be used only by visitors of the dwelling unit to which the permits were issued. Residents may not use Visitor permits on their own vehicles.

The application form for a permit requires proof of residency within the RPPD, a current photo ID, and your vehicle registration. If a vehicle is not registered to you, you must show proof of control of the vehicle (i.e. a written notarized statement from the owner). To obtain an Employee permit, the Employer must sign the application form and list the business license number.

Falsifying information on registration applications is prohibited and shall void the permit registration. This includes, but is not limited to, falsification of name, residence, license number, and any other data required for registration of a motor vehicle; obtaining a parking permit for an unauthorized person and accepting or using an unauthorized parking permit.

Any of the following items, showing a current address in the RPPD and dated within the last 30 days, are acceptable documentation of proof of residency:

  • A current energy bill
  • A current cable television bill
  • A current rental receipt or agreement
  • A current bank statement
  • A current credit card bill

The RPPD is enforced through regular patrol by the Bozeman Parking Services Division. Vehicles parked within the RPPD that do not have the appropriate permits will be issued a Citation, with a penalty of $60 in the MSU RPPD and $20 in the Bozeman High RPPD. If you are planning a special event, at a residence or business within the RPPD, and your Visitor permits are not sufficient to accommodate the number of expected guests, please contact the Parking Services Division for assistance; 406-582-2903.
