Not only does the City promote water conservation, we're doing our part to work towards a water smart future!
Here are some examples of how the City is working to save water:
Prioritizing Water and Energy Efficiency at the Bozeman Public Safety Center
Opened in 2022, the Bozeman Public Safety Center features WaterSense® toilets and urinals, along with 0.5 GPM aerators on all faucets. The facility also boasts a high-performance exterior that helps maintain clean air and a consistent interior temperature, enhancing energy efficiency. The building’s water-smart landscape consists of over 90% drought tolerant plantings, which includes a drought tolerant seeded meadow that covers much of the area. It also features efficient irrigation technology, such as subsurface drip irrigation to minimize runoff in all boulevard areas and multi-stream multi-trajectory spray nozzles to efficiently irrigate functional turfgrass areas featured on site. Learn more about the water efficient landscape and irrigation design featured at the Safety Center by visiting our Drought Tolerant Demonstration Garden Webpage.
Surface Water Irrigation at Sunset Hills Cemetery
Irrigation water doesn’t need to be treated like our drinking water does. The Sunset Hills Cemetery has transitioned its irrigation practices away from using treated potable water for irrigation to raw surface water from Bozeman Creek, saving the City roughly $40,000 per year. This keeps more treated water available for essential uses in our community.
Bozeman Distribution System Leak Repair Efforts
The underground pipes that distribute City water to your home aren't meant to last forever. That's why the City proactively identifies and replaces leaky pipes each year, working to minimize water lost throughout our water distribution system. While some leakage is inevitable in any system, we’re committed to making water distribution as efficient as possible.
Leak Monitoring Efforts at City Facilities
We’re just as committed as you are to stopping leaks in their tracks. That’s why our staff use the Dropcountr water use portal to monitor for leaks in all City buildings and irrigation systems connected to our public supplies. By setting leak alerts and usage thresholds in each of our buildings, we can quickly spot leaks and work to resolve them before they become major sources of water waste. Did you know you can register for a free Dropcountr account, too? Visit our Dropcountr Webpage for setup instructions and get started today.
Senior Center Bulk Plumbing Retrofit
Toilets, urinals, and faucets – oh my! In 2016, the City completed a retrofit of the Senior Center’s toilets, urinals and faucets, which involved retrofitting 18 toilets, various faucets, and 2 urinals to high efficiency WaterSense® models. The Senior Center achieved a 40% reduction in water consumption following the first year of the retrofit.
City Hall
High efficiency aerators were installed in all City Hall bathrooms to reduce water use at faucets. You can save water by installing faucet aerators in your home too! Just swing by the Water Conservation Office during our scheduled customer service hours to pick up free aerators for your home faucets all year long.
