Animal Control Officers teach people about animal regulations. They also enforce rules. They use public education and problem-solving to handle animal complaints. Their first priority is always the safety of the public and animals.

  • The City requires leashes for dogs and cats. Animals can be unpredictable around strange people or other animals. Leashes are a good way to protect your pet from others.
  • You can't leash your pet to a tree, bike rack, or street sign. This practice is common on downtown sidewalks, but it's bad for your pet. They may act oddly around strangers who walk too close or try to pet them. Strangers could also take them away. Many downtown businesses allow leashed pets to shop with you.
  • Please make sure your dog is not barking and bothering your neighbors. Most complaints happen when the owner is not home. Find ways to comfort your pet when you're away.

How to License a Pet in the City of Bozeman

Bozeman city code requires a license for all chickens, dogs, or cats over six months old. To license your pet, create an account and apply on our online pet license portal. If you own three or more cats or dogs, you must apply for a kennel license on the online kennel license portal.

Every dog or cat over six months must also be vaccinated against rabies. All local veterinarians offer these vaccinations. They will supply you with a tag to put on your pet’s collar.
