We are writing to inform you of a phishing scheme targeting Bozeman permit applicants for development projects. To ensure your safety and protect your personal and financial information, please adhere to the helpful recommendations below.

1. Verify Payment Portal:

The official payment portal for the City of Bozeman Planning, Building, & Engineering Departments is C2G. Only use Click2Gov to access and pay your fees. To navigate to Click2Gov you will either be sent the link directly via a ProjectDox task, or access Click2Gov directly from Bozeman Development Center. The image below shows a phishing attempt requesting payment via wired funds.

2. Check Email Domains:

Official communication from City of Bozeman employees will come from an email address with the bozeman.net or bozemanmt.gov domain or through ProjectDox at https://bozeman-mt-us.avolvecloud.com/. Be cautious of emails from unfamiliar domains such as the one in the image below ending in @usa.com. The recipient's inbox highlighted that they've not received an email 

3. Inspect Hyperlinks Carefully: 

Prior to clicking any links, hover your mouse over the hyperlink to reveal the actual web address. Avoid opening the link if the web address does not align with bozeman.net or bozemanmt.gov domains, or the payment portal URL specified above.

4. Contact Us for Verification:

If you receive any emails or communications that seem suspicious, please contact Bozeman Community Development at 406-582-2260, for verification and assistance. You may also email building@bozemanmt.gov, or planningtech@bozemanmt.gov to verify any information.

FBI Announcement dated 3-9-2026:

The FBI is warning the public about an emerging phishing scheme by criminals impersonating city and county officials to solicit fraudulent payments for city and county planning and zoning permits. The criminals leverage publicly available permit information to identify potential victims and increase the legitimacy of the scam.
