The Bozeman community will memorialize those who have experienced homelessness and passed away in 2025 at the annual Homeless Persons' Memorial Vigil. This event is always held on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice, to remember unhoused people and to call attention to homelessness, especially during the winter months. The Memorial will be held outdoors on the Library’s front plaza at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21. The public is encouraged to attend and dress warmly for the event.
“On average, the life expectancy of people who are homeless is about 28 years shorter than that of people who are housed,” said Ben Nielsen, Head of Adult Programming and Outreach at Bozeman Public Library. “This memorial service recognizes the harsh realities that people experiencing homelessness deal with and the impact that has on their lives and our community.”
The Homeless Persons’ Memorial Vigil is presented in partnership with Bozeman Public Library, Dahl Funeral and Cremation Services, HRDC, and the Greater Yellowstone Threshold Singers.
Bozeman is currently providing shelter to dozens of people, including children, on a nightly basis at HRDC, Family Promise and a handful of hotels. That count doesn’t include people staying in private shelters, sleeping on the street or being housed in a hotel with funds provided by Love, Inc. or other local groups.
