Police Crash Investigator I or II

POSITION SUMMARY:

In this essential role within the Police Department you will be responsible for providing crash-site response and investigation of motor vehicle crashes including technical analysis of crashes and the related administrative duties, and assisting the department with other various administrative support duties including inventory control of department equipment.  This position requires that you develop and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of groups and individuals including, but not limited to, Police department employees, other City employees, other law enforcement agencies, court employees, attorneys, insurance agents, elected and appointed officials, media representatives, and the general public. This includes verbal communication and professional correspondence.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CRASH INVESTIGATOR I:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent; and
  • Training or experience in conducting crash investigations; and
  • At least one year of experience in law enforcement or a related field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CRASH INVESTIGATOR I:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain a Montana class D Driver’s License within 60 days of employment;
  • Completion CJIN/NCIC certification within 180 days of employment;
  • Completion of Basic At-Scene Crash Investigation course, or equivalent, within one year of employment;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory completion of the conditional offer process including a driving record history check, criminal background check, thorough reference checks, NCIC/CJIN and local records check, and a general internet search. 

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CRASH INVESTIGATOR II:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent; and
  • At least one year of training or experience in conducting crash investigations; and
  • At least two years of experience in law enforcement or a related field; and
  • Possession of a Basic At-Scene Crash Investigation course certification, or equivalent, at the time of hire; and
  • Possession of Advanced (Technical) Crash Investigation course, or equivalent, at the time of hire; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
