POSITION SUMMARY:

The Building Inspectors work with the City Building Division in performing a variety of plan reviews and inspections on buildings under construction pertaining to adopted codes, laws, and regulations, and ensuring new and existing construction complies with related building codes, energy codes, and local ordinances.  The Inspector II and III positions handle a broader range of inspection assignments. This position requires the ability to quickly establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and business owners, City employees, and the general public.  Most work is performed in an outdoor work environment with exposure to a variety of weather elements and potential personal hazards in construction zones.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (BUILDING INSPECTOR II):

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • At least two years-experience in building construction, plans examining, or building inspection; and
  • At least one year-experience as a Building Inspector; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS (BUILDING INSPECTOR II):

  • Valid Driver’s License and must obtain valid Montana Driver’s license within 60 days of employment;
  • Possession of at least THREE certifications in one discipline at the time of hire and have the ability to obtain a Combo certification within one year of hire as a Building Inspector II (the City will assist you with obtaining additional certifications):
    o ICC Residential or Commercial Building Certification;
    o ICC Residential or Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification;
    o ICC Residential or Commercial Electrical Inspector Certification;
    o IAPMO Plumbing Inspector Certification;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • At least two years-experience in building construction, plans examining, or building inspection; and
  • At least two years-experience as a Building Inspector; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS (BUILDING INSPECTOR III):

  • Valid Driver’s License and must obtain valid Montana Driver’s license within 60 days of employment;
  • Possession of seven of the listed certifications (one Combo certification and three certifications in one discipline):
    o ICC Residential Building Inspector;
    o ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector;
    o ICC Residential Electrical Inspector;
    o ICC Commercial Building Certification;
    o ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification;
    o ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector Certification;
    o IAPMO Plumbing Inspector.
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
