Tips to Identify

Hazardous Household Chemicals

 

Most household chemicals are hazardous because they are toxic, corrosive or flammable.

 

TOXIC

CORROSIVE

FLAMMABLE

These are poisonous. Can be harmful or fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Toxic wastes include:

Acidic or alkaline products that can burn or corrode other materials.

Can easily catch fire.

 

 

 

Antifreeze

Drain cleaner

Gasoline

Wood preservatives

Oven cleaner

Aerosol containers

Paint strippers

Toilet bowl cleaners

Roofing tars

Pesticides and herbicides

Concrete cleaners

Degreasing solvents

Motor oil

Swimming pool acids

Cleaning solvents

Spot removers

Battery acids/batteries

Paint Thinners

Latex paint containing mercury

 

 

 

 

READ THE LABEL!

Products with these labels should ONLY be dropped off at a hazardous waste collection facility.

 


CAUTION

Indicates a mild hazard.

 

WARNING

Indicates a moderate hazard.

 

DANGER

Indicates an extreme hazard.


 

NEVER dispose of household hazardous chemicals down the drain, toilet, in your trash, or in the street! These chemicals can enter

our ground water and streams putting aquatic life and human health at risk.

 

 

 

How to Use the Household Hazardous Waste Program

 

Hazardous chemicals that can no longer be used should be taken to the HHW Center at the Convenience Site. You will need to make an appointment to drop-off materials by completing the registration form (click here) and sending it to the City Shop Complex.

  Nail polish remover

  Shoe dye

  Toilet, tub and tile cleaner

  Automatic transmission fluid

  Brake fluid

  Chrome polish

  Diesel fuel

  Engine degreaser

  Fuel oil

  Gasoline

  Motor oil

  Paint – Auto

 

WORKSHOP

  Fiberglass & Epoxy resins

  Glue with solvent

  Gun cleaner

  Paint – oil based

  Paint – latex with mercury or lead
