Species Selection

Planting a tree is an important decision which has esthetic and economic benefits today and for generations to come. Thus, it is important to consider what species of tree would best be suited to Bozeman's elevation, climate and planting location. In an effort to simplify the process, the City of Bozeman Forestry Department has compiled a Tree Selection Guide which contains species of trees suited for Bozeman's climate and elevation. The guide also breaks the species into categories suitable for different planting locations such as under power lines or on boulevards. Boulevard trees are a wonderful addition to the City of Bozeman streets and are encouraged by the Forestry Department by offering information and maintaining boulevard trees. The Forestry Department also operates a seasonal Cost Share Program each spring to encourage the growth of Bozeman's urban forest. The City of Bozeman does require a permit before boulevard trees can be planted to ensure the proper placement and species selection. Ordinance NO. 1365 outlines the regulations regarding trees and shrubs within City of Bozeman limits and should be reviewed before planting trees and shrubs.
