What is a Highway Advisory Radio Portable?
A Highway Advisory Radio Portable (HARP) is similar to many advisory radios along highways that provide important information to travelers, except that they are portable. Gallatin County has 3 HARP trailers that can be set up anywhere and provide important information on either 1600, or 1700 Khz. Our HARPs are self contained running off of batteries and a solar panel for extended periods of time. The message being broadcast can be updated remotely from any telephone.
When would I see one of these?
HARPs are often deployed when officials have information they wish to provide to individuals in a certain area. This could be for any number of instances, but are frequently utilized to updating people on large wildfires, and other incidents such as floods. When citizens see signs advising them of an "Emergency Ahead" and to tune to a specific frequency on their radio, we highly encourage people to do so.
How does my agency request a HARP?
Public Safety Agencies may request a Highway Advisory Radio Portable (HARP) for public safety uses by contacting Gallatin County Dispatch and requesting the Gallatin County Emergency Management Duty Officer be contacted with the request.
