Forestry Division
John Van Delinder, Superintendent
The Forestry Division is responsible for the planting of new trees and the
maintenance of existing trees in city parks, cemetery, and street rights-of-way.
Money to support this program comes from the Tree Maintenance Fund which is a
yearly assessment on all property within the city limits. There are currently
four full- time ISA Certified Arborists on staff that are responsible for the
care and maintenance of Bozeman's urban forest. Trees on street boulevards are
trimmed on a ten year cycle for structure, safety, and pedestrian and vehicle
clearance.
Bozeman is a Tree City USA, has received numerous Growth Awards through that
organization, and conducts annual Arbor Day celebrations.
The Forestry Division has a computerized inventory of all the public trees and
is in the process of integrating GPS/GIS with the existing inventory system.
There is a free planting permit that is required for all plantings in the City
rights-of-way to ensure that the proper species is planted in the proper place
and to enable Forestry personnel to update the inventory.
Forestry personnel work with the Planning, Engineering, and Street departments
on a variety of issues ranging from subdivision review to street/sidewalk and
tree conflicts.
