Spring Sweeping

Sweeping a city streetThe street sweepers come out once the snow has melted. We sweep the downtown and business district streets two to five times per week through the summer and into the fall. That schedule stays in effect until the snow flies. We try to sweep Main Street and N. 7th Avenue on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We then sweep Babcock and Mendenhall Streets, as well as the cross streets, and 11th Ave. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Residential streets are swept twice a year, once in the spring, usually in April or May, and once in the fall, usually in November during the fall leaf cleanup. To learn more about the fall leaf cleanup operation click here.

Sweeping occurs because it is imperative that the storm drains remain clear and unplugged. In an effort to keep the drains from plugging with the sand that is put down during the winter months, the Spring Street Sweeping Project was started. We ask residents not to rake their yard waste into the streets in the spring because we only bring in the street sweepers for this project. Yard waste can be taken to the convenience site on story Mill Rd for a fee.

The crews will start in the subdivisions in April and then move into the core area.

Emptying a street sweeperThe crews work first in the subdivisions and then move to the core area. To find out when we will be in your area click on one of the links below. The core area is generally the area between Wallace and 25th and Grant and Tamarack and the subdivisions are the rest. To avoid any conflict with school activities during the week, the crews are scheduled to sweep around Irving, Whittier, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Emily Dickenson, and Morning Star schools on a Saturday. To assist the crews in completing this project please have your vehicles removed from the street by 6:00am on the day your street is scheduled to be swept. If the sweepers have to maneuver around parked cars we will not come back later to sweep the areas that were blocked. The residential streets are not scheduled to be swept again until fall. Once the street signs have been removed, you can once again park in that area.

Subdivision Sweeping:  In the past the street crews have not signed subdivisions for street maintenance but this year they may sign some streets depending on the amount of debris and the number of vehicles parked on the street. If Street Maintenance Signs are installed they will be put up by noon the day prior to the streets being swept.
No Parking Street Maintenance Signs

Core Area Sweeping:  The Street Department Crews do install Street Maintenance Signs in these areas by noon the day prior to the street sweeping. This schedule can change at any time, if there are signs up on days other than what the schedule says please do not park were signed.
