Fall Cleanup

The snow has come so the 2011 Fall Leaf Cleanup Project has ended for the season, the last 3 scheduled days will not be completed.

The annual Leaf Cleanup Project usually starts in early November.  We do a leaf cleanup in the fall to protect the storm drains from plugging then freezing which could cause problems in the spring when it starts to thaw.  The cleanup is strictly to cleanup the leaves; no garden or yard waste can be put in the street and no brush piles either.

The crews work simultaneously in the core area as well as the subdivisions. We have such a small window of opportunity for leaf collection, please read the information for your area to find out the best way to prepare your leaves for collection.

Please keep in mind the completion of this project is contingent on the weather, the crews that work the leaf collection are also the crews that plow the streets.

The pictures below show why we start the cleanup on the south side of the city first.  Both pictures were taken the same day; the left is North Bozeman and the right is South Willson.

City residents who will not be ready to have their leaves picked up on the scheduled day can bring the leaves to the City Shop Complex at 814 N. Bozeman from 10am to 2pm on three consecutive Saturdays.  A truck will be parked in the front parking lot on November 5th, 12th and 19th to accept the leaves.  We will only take leaves; no brush or garden and yard waste will be accepted.  The leaves can be transported in any type of container, just be aware that whatever container, other than paper compostable bags, will need to taken when you go.

Core Area: Residents can rake their leaves into the street in this area.  We come in with tractors, loaders, dump trucks and street sweepers to pick them up because the storm drains are smaller and more prone to freezing.  No Parking Street Maintenance signs are put up before noon the day prior to the pick up so residents have ample time to remove all vehicles, campers, trailers and any other items that will be in the way.  Parking tickets will be issued to anyone violating the no parking signed areas; the signs will be removed that day when the project is finished.

Subdivisions: Residents in this area need to bag their leaves in paper compostable bags.  The storm drains are newer and larger and less likely to plug and freeze.  The bags should be put on the boulevard prior to the scheduled pick up date where the Forestry Department will pick them up.  Any leaves raked into the street will not be picked up because the street crews will be using the heavy equipment in the core area at that time. No street maintenance signs will be installed in these areas and no tickets will be issued.

If you have any questions regarding this project please feel free to contact the City Shops at 582-3200, #4.
