Parking Education and Enforcement

Parking Signs
The Bozeman Police Department has one full-time employee who focuses on parking education and enforcement issues throughout the city of Bozeman.  This enforcement is generally outside of the downtown business district, Montana State University Residential District and Bozeman High School Residential District with a primary assignment to identify, track and ultimately remove abandoned or hazardous vehicles from city streets.

How to report a parking complaint or an abandoned or junk vehicle:

Call the Police Department at 582-2000.
  • One vehicle complaint per call, please.
  • Provide a vehicle description and license plate, if available.
  • Provide the location or cross-street where the vehicle is located.
  • Indicate the parking infraction (i.e. blocking a sidewalk or wrong side of street parking)
  • Any information to support how long the vehicle has been illegally parked is helpful to know.
  • The call will be dispatched to the most available parking or police officer to handle.
  • Please be patient, as the police department handles over a hundred calls a day.  Abandoned vehicles may take up to two weeks before it is removed from a city street.

What is an abandoned or junk vehicle:

abandoned vehicleIn Bozeman, vehicles or trailers parked on a public street or highway must be moved every 48 hours.  A vehicle or trailer clearly left parked on a public street or highway over 5 days will be ticketed and flagged as abandoned to allow the registered owner an opportunity to address the problem and move the vehicle or trailer.

If the vehicle or trailer has not been moved from the original location after 10 days of being ticketed and flagged as abandoned, it will be impounded, resulting in additional fines and costs to the registered owner.

We encourage vehicle and trailer owners to avoid using the public streets for vehicle storage, but rather to store them in driveways, garages or private storage locations.  We need all owners to do their part in keeping our streets clear of potential hazards and unsightly abandoned vehicles and trailers.

VEHICLES DEEMED A SAFETY HAZARD MAY BE TOWED IMMEDIATELY

Once an abandoned vehicle or trailer has been impouned by a local tow company, the registered owner will be notified and given 30 days to pay all costs and fines related to the vehicle or trailer.  Failure to pay such fines and costs within 30 days of the notice may result in the title ownership being transferred to the tow company and eventually sold.

Occasionally a vehicle is categorized as junk.  When a vehicle is clearly valued at under $500 and has other factors to categorize it as a "junk" vehicle, it is turned over to the Gallatin County Junk Program, where it is then drained of all fluids, and crushed and destroyed.  Other factors leading to the vehicle being junk include, broken or cracked windows, dripping fluids, missing engine or major body parts, major rust, expired registration.  Once the vehicle is turned over to the junk vehicle program, there is no returning the vehicle to the owner.

There is no cost for removing junk vehicles, including your own.  Contact the Gallatin County Junk Vehicle program at  406-582-3250, or go to Gallatin County Junk Vehicle Information
